A Charming 17th Century Carved Oak Figure

Of a boy playing a musical wind instrument, possibly a flageolet. Beneath a stitched and pleated cap, curly hair escapes to frame a very cherubic face. His tunic, with vertical row of buttons, has a wide and deep collar, pleated arms and flamboyant cuffs. The pantaloon-type trousers finish at the knee, and I would assume stockinged leggings would have finished off the outfit.

The figure is carved with a flat back, suggesting it was part of the decoration of an early door or cupboard front.

Flemish, circa 1600.

Height 11.5 inches, width 3.25 inches, depth back to front 2 inches.

Ref 4001
