An Extremely Rare Small Charles I Oak Open Cupboard

Having three shelves, each made from a single board, with chamfered and scratch-lined edge.

The top rails, front and sides, are carved with flamboyant flattened “S” scrolls, enriched with small circular punch decoration. The centre rails, containing a concealed full-length drawer, are carved with a lunette design, each semi-circle having a stylised floral pattern infill. The bottom rails and block feet are run-moulded, with a simple incised decoration within the moulding.

The shelves are supported at the front by superbly turned pillars, and at the back by run-moulded stiles.

This wonderful small piece of English oak furniture must have been made for a modest (small size) but relatively comfortable house, as the piece has remained in a remarkable original condition, even down to the lack of wear and rot on the feet.

Fabulous colour and surface.

English, Southern, circa 1630-35.

Width 34.5 inches, back to front 15 inches, height 47 inches.
