A Rare and Humorous Early 17th Century Carved Oak Pew End

Depicting a male figure with cap, flowing hair and beard. Perhaps leaning forward and listening intently to the sermon, or levering himself from his seat after the sermon has finished.

The figure is carved with a flat back, which would suggest the pew – or stall – was against the wall, and this would be the left hand side, if seated. For an example of how the figure might have appeared on the pew, see the diagram below.
